Faber to publish Francis Spufford's new historical fantasy novel Nonesuch
Publishing company Faber announced on Tuesday that it will publish Nonesuch, a new historical fantasy novel by bestselling author Francis Spufford, on 26 February 2026.
Publisher Alex Bowler acquired UK Commonwealth and EU ex-Canada rights from Clare Alexander at Aitken Alexander. A sequel is already planned.
Set in London during the summer of 1939, Nonesuch follows Iris Hawkins, a young woman working in City finance, who is drawn into a world where time bends, spirits can be summoned, and history is under threat. Amid the onset of war and Nazi air raids, she faces a fascist fanatic intent on rewriting the past.
Spufford, acclaimed for both fiction and non-fiction, is the author of Golden Hill, winner of the Costa First Novel Award, Light Perpetual, longlisted for the Booker Prize, and Cahokia Jazz, winner of the 2023 Sidewise Award. He teaches writing at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
Bowler described Nonesuch as a fully realised blend of fantasy and historical fiction, inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin and C. S. Lewis, and praised Spufford as "a supreme historian and novelist."
