Simon & Schuster to publish posthumous book by David McCullough
Publishing company Simon & Schuster announced on Tuesday that it will publish HISTORY MATTERS, a posthumous collection of essays by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough, on 16 September 2025.
The book explores the importance of history and American values, featuring previously unpublished essays. It is edited by McCullough's daughter, Dorie McCullough Lawson, and longtime collaborator Michael Hill. A foreword by historian Jon Meacham will accompany the collection.
McCullough, who passed away in 2022, was renowned for his works on American history, including Truman, John Adams and 1776. His essays in HISTORY MATTERS reflect his belief in the importance of seeing history from the perspective of those who lived through it, offering insights into American character, optimism and determination.
Simon & Schuster acquired world, audio and first serial rights for the book from Anne Sibbald of Janklow & Nesbit Associates. Bob Bender, executive editor emeritus, served as editor. The cover art features a photograph of McCullough at the Truman Library.
