Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars (STO: VOLCAR-B) announced on Thursday that it is introducing Safety Coach, an optional app that provides real-time driving insights through the infotainment system and the Volvo Cars mobile app.

Each driver receives a dynamic Safety Coach score designed to encourage safer habits. The guidance is based on everyday driving behaviour, including braking, acceleration and cornering, and draws on the company's long-standing safety data.

Safety Coach has been developed with Cambridge Mobile Telematics, which supplies the algorithm used to generate each score. The app allows drivers to opt in to use the service and separately opt in to share data with affiliated insurers for usage-based premiums.

The app will first be available in Sweden and Norway for most Volvo models from model year 2020 with a Google android-based infotainment system. Volvo Cars customers in Sweden and Norway can also access a usage-based insurance offer from Volvia if they choose to share their driving data.

The app is planned for subsequent roll-out in the United States and other European markets, with further insurance-related offers expected. Models eligible for the initial roll-out include XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, XC60, EX60, XC90, V90, EX90 and ES90, with timing varying by model and market.
