Norway-based renewable energy solutions provider Scatec ASA (OSE:SCATC) announced on Wednesday that it has reached commercial operations for the second phase of its 1.1 GW Obelisk solar and 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage project in Egypt.

The second phase adds 564 MW of solar capacity to the first phase, which comprises 561 MW of solar capacity and the full battery storage system.

The project, Africa's largest hybrid solar and battery installation, is expected to produce more than 3,000 GWh of clean electricity annually and abate more than 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year under a 25-year USD-denominated Power Purchase Agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.

With Obelisk fully operational alongside the 380 MW BenBan solar plant, Scatec now has approximately 1.5 GW of renewable capacity in operation in Egypt.

Scatec is the controlling shareholder, with National Bank of Egypt, Norfund and EDF Power Solutions as minority equity partners, while EBRD, AfDB, BII and EIB provided senior financing. The company developed and delivered the project through its integrated model, providing engineering, procurement and construction, asset management, and operations and maintenance services.

Scatec's near-term Egyptian growth portfolio includes more than 4.3 GW of renewable energy capacity and 4.1 GWh of battery storage, with the combined portfolio expected to generate about 17 TWh of clean electricity annually.
