City centre set for a Big Summer Takeover with free family events on Saturdays in August

Coventry City Council is bringing a burst of summer energy to the city centre this August with the Big Summer Takeover - a month-long series of free family events in the city centre at weekends

From seaside themed performances to BMX stunts, street theatre, an adrenaline inducing zipwire and open-air films, each weekend will offer a fun experience designed to bring people together to celebrate the summer in Coventry.

The Big Summer Takeover will turn the city centre into a lively outdoor destination throughout August, offering families high-quality entertainment and activities at no cost. Each themed weekend will bring something new to the city centre:

* City Seaside - 1 August: Broadgate becomes Coventry's very own seaside escape, street performances, a giant inflatable lobster and dry land water skiing.

* Movies in the Ruins - 8-9 August: Daytime and early-evening screenings of family favourite movies, creating a relaxed open-air cinema experience in the Cathedral Ruins.

* Sports Fest - 11-15 August: Five days of sports and movement activities for all ages. Families can try out a wide range of sports, from football and athletics to racket sports, dance, fitness sessions and inclusive activities.

* Action Zone - 22 August: High-energy ramps, jumps and freestyle displays set to a DJ soundtrack. Visitors can learn some basic stunts or have a go on the zipwire running from Broadgate to Upper Precinct.

Councillor John McNicholas, Cabinet Member for Events at Coventry City Council, said: "We want the city centre to be the go-to spot for our residents this summer - somewhere families can drop in and enjoy a range of free activities throughout August.

"The Big Summer Takeover really will bring people together to enjoy a mix of performances and activities.

"I'm particularly looking forward to the free family cinema weekend, but with so many brilliant activities taking place, I encourage as many people as possible to attend and enjoy this exciting series of events - be part of a summer to remember in the heart of the city!"
