Faber to release William Golding: The Faber Letters in November 2025

Book publisher Faber & Faber announced on Tuesday that it will release William Golding: The Faber Letters on 6 November 2025, showcasing four decades of correspondence between the Nobel Prize-winning author and his longtime editor, Charles Monteith. The volume is edited by Tim Kendall, Professor of English Literature at the University of Exeter.

Faber acquired World All Language rights directly from William Golding Limited. The collection traces Golding's career from the discovery of Lord of the Flies in 1953 - rescued by Monteith from a manuscript slush pile and later selling over 25 million copies - through his rise to Booker Prize and Nobel Prize recognition.

The letters reveal the evolution of a professional partnership into a close friendship, while offering insights into the creative process, editorial influence and the personal challenges Golding faced throughout his career. Commentary from Kendall, Golding's daughter Judy Carver, and Faber editors underscores Monteith's role in shaping one of the 20th century's most influential novelists.

Golding, who died in 1993, remains best known for Lord of the Flies, which has sold millions worldwide and is being adapted into a BBC drama scheduled for broadcast in 2026. Monteith, who edited leading writers including Samuel Beckett, Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney, remained at Faber until his death in 1995.
