IonQ acquires ID Quantique to strengthen leadership in quantum networking and secure communications

Quantum computing company IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) confirmed on Tuesday that it has finalised the acquisition of a controlling stake in ID Quantique, a provider of quantum-safe networking and quantum detection systems.

This expands IonQ's product portfolio to include quantum key distribution systems, quantum random number generators and single-photon detectors.

The acquisition adds nearly 300 granted and pending patents to IonQ's portfolio, bringing its total to over 900 and reinforcing its position in quantum intellectual property. ID Quantique's technologies have been deployed in national quantum-safe networking initiatives in Singapore, South Korea and across the European Union.

Both companies will continue to provide existing products and services to their respective customer bases. The transaction builds on IonQ's broader quantum networking strategy, which recently included the acquisition of Qubitekk.

IonQ also announced a series of US government contracts, including with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security and the United States Air Force Research Lab. Additionally, the company has signed a USD22m agreement with energy and communications provider EPB to establish the first US-based quantum computing and networking hub in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
