Moon + Bird acquires global rights to picture book on bipolar disorder
Moon + Bird, an imprint of book publisher Watkins Media, has acquired world rights to Kite Day, a new picture book exploring a child's experience with a guardian living with bipolar disorder, book news company The Bookseller revealed on Friday.
Written by psychotherapist Lisa Varchol Perron and illustrated by Siski Kalla, the title is set for global release in spring 2026.
Commissioning editor Gemma Creffield secured all language rights from Tricia Lawrence at EMLA, while Kalla represented herself. Distribution will be handled globally, including in the US and Canada, via Penguin Random House Publisher Services.
The book aims to support caregivers and educators in addressing mental health with children. Perron emphasised the importance of normalising conversations about mood disorders, while head of design Karen Smith highlighted Kalla's illustration style as key to capturing the book's emotional depth.
