World of Books launches Sustainable Story Award to support authors driving environmental and social change
Used books retailer World of Books on Tuesday announced the launch of the Sustainable Story Award, a new initiative aimed at recognising authors whose works champion environmental, social and economic sustainability.
The award is open to UK-based authors with at least one previously published book and spans fiction, non-fiction and children's literature. Works must address topics such as climate action, biodiversity, renewable energy, social justice or sustainable economies.
The total prize fund is GBP25,000, with GBP15,000 awarded to the winner and GBP5,000 each to two runners-up. Winners will also receive mentorship from industry experts.
Judges include Anna Bond of Octopus Publishing Group, Amanda Ridout of Boldwood Books and Shannon Cullen of Walker Books, alongside children's author Piers Torday and Sophie Galleymore Bird, a novelist, editor and communications consultant for environmental organisations.
Entrants must submit a book proposal, the first three chapters and a statement on their contribution to sustainability discourse. Submissions open on 22 April 2025 and close on 6 July 2025.
A shortlist of six authors per category (Fiction, Non-Fiction and Children's) will be announced in August. The winners will be revealed on 10 September 2025.
