Discovery Texas Interventional Psychiatry Reports Strong Depression Outcomes From TMS Therapy Program
* Among clients with a complete PHQ-9 record, the average depression score fell 73 percent from intake to discharge, with nearly all clients moving into the minimal or mild symptom range
DALLAS-FORT WORTH, Texas - Discovery Texas Interventional Psychiatry (DTIP) today released outcomes data from its transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy program, showing substantial improvement in depression symptoms among clients with a complete PHQ-9 record at both intake and discharge during the reporting period.
Among the 22 clients with a documented PHQ-9 depression score at both intake and discharge, the average score fell from 17.4 to 4.7, a 73 percent reduction. Eighty-six percent of clients achieved a clinical response, defined as at least a 50 percent drop in PHQ-9 score from baseline, and 45 percent reached remission, meaning a discharge score below 5. Ninety-five percent of clients ended treatment in the Minimal or Mild severity range on the PHQ-9 scale, up from just 5 percent at intake.
Nearly every client in the reporting group began treatment in the Moderate-to-Severe range, with six clients entering at the Severe level and 12 at the Moderately Severe level. By discharge, 21 of the 22 clients had moved into the Minimal or Mild bands, the two lowest severity levels on the PHQ-9 scale. No client with a complete record ended treatment with a higher score than they started with.
"These numbers reflect what we see clinically every week: people who felt stuck after trying medication are able to make real, measurable progress with TMS. When 95 percent of our clients leave treatment in the minimal or mild range, that's not an abstraction, that's people getting their lives back."
- Michael Banis, Chief Growth Officer, Discovery MSO
DTIP measures outcomes using the PHQ-9, a validated 9-item screening tool used nationally to track depression severity, scored from 0 to 27. Clinical response is defined per standard convention as a 50 percent or greater reduction from baseline, and remission as a discharge score below 5. The results reflect the 22 clients with a documented PHQ-9 at both intake and discharge during the reporting period; client identities have been removed for this release, and source records are maintained in the clinical chart.
TMS is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. It requires no medication and no sedation, and most patients remain awake throughout each session and return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward. Individual results vary, and DTIP's care team coordinates with each patient's existing providers throughout a course of treatment.
Depression and substance use disorders frequently occur together, and DTIP continues to coordinate care with fellow Discovery MSO provider Discovery Point Retreat, which treats co-occurring mental health conditions as part of a full continuum of addiction care, so both concerns can be addressed together. DPR clients can access TMS through DTIP as part of that same coordinated care; more information is available on Discovery Point Retreat's TMS therapy page.
