Alberta supports Ukraine's energy recovery

New funding will contribute to the purchase and delivery of energy equipment in Ukraine, repairing critical energy infrastructure where it is needed most.

Alberta's government is providing $250,000 to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund to help repair energy systems damaged by the war, ensuring hospitals, schools, water services and homes in Ukraine continue to have reliable power and heat.

This contribution builds on Alberta's existing cooperation with Ukraine in the energy sector, including a memorandum of understanding signed in 2024, as well as a $150,000 grant provided to Energize Ukraine that same year. It also complements broader Canadian government efforts to support Ukraine's energy system recovery.

"For more than four years, the people of Ukraine have shown remarkable strength and resilience in the face of Russia's unprovoked invasion. Alberta is proud to stand with Ukraine and support efforts that help the people of Ukraine access reliable energy and essential services. As home to one of the largest Ukrainian communities outside Ukraine, Alberta shares deep and enduring ties with the Ukrainian people, and we remain committed to supporting them." Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, parliamentary secretary for settlement services and Ukrainian evacuees, MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville

"Alberta's contribution comes at a time when continued donations is directly proportional to the fund's ability to provide ongoing, rapid support to repair infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks, which have persisted with little sign of relief. By stepping up to support Ukraine, Alberta supports the fund's core mission: to ensure that energy companies are able to keep electricity, heating and other vital services on for communities across the nation going through its fifth year of full-scale war." Artur Lorkowski, director, Energy Community Secretariat

"Energy resilience is a critical pillar of Ukraine's survival and future victory as it continues to fight Russia's full-scale brutal armed aggression and deliberate attacks on its critical infrastructure. We are deeply grateful to the Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta for this timely and generous contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. This support will help meet Ukraine's most urgent energy needs, restoring essential services, strengthening the country's resilience and saving lives of ordinary Ukrainians." Andrii Plakhotniuk, ambassador of Ukraine to Canada

The Ukraine Energy Support Fund is managed by the Energy Community Secretariat, an independent executive institution of the Energy Community based in Vienna, Austria. The Energy Community Secretariat acts as an intermediary between donors and Ukrainian authorities, and its membership includes Ukraine, the European Union and a number of other European countries.

The fund enables rapid procurement and delivery of critical equipment to repair damaged energy infrastructure, helping maintain essential services for communities across Ukraine.
