Mileage rate review is long overdue, says UNISON
* Workers have paid a heavy price for frozen rates
Commenting on today's announcement from the Treasury that mileage expense rates are to be reviewed, UNISON general secretary Andrea Egan said:
"This review is long overdue. Many workers have paid a heavy price for simply going about their jobs due to frozen rates.
"For people providing essential public services who need their own cars for work, that's left them thousands of pounds out of pocket.
"It's good news the chancellor has listened and is heading in the right direction. Particularly when household bills are on the rise again."
Notes to editors:
- UNISON has been campaigning on the need to update mileage rates for several years and recently raised the issue directly with chancellor Rachel Reeves.
- UNISON is the UK's largest union with more than 1.3 million members providing public services in education, local government, the NHS, police service and energy. They are employed in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
