airBaltic was founded on 28 August 1995 through a joint venture agreement between the Latvian state and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). Just weeks later, on 1 October, 1995, the airline operated its very first commercial flight from Riga to Stockholm with a 33-seat Saab SF340 aircraft.
