Information evening for prospective election candidates
* A Candidate Information Evening will be held in Otepoti Dunedin next week, to provide helpful information for anyone considering standing in the October local government elections.
The DCC is encouraging people to take a stand for their community and stand for Council or their local Community Board. Candidate nominations open on Friday, 4 July and close on Friday, 1 August.
"Local elections allow communities to make democratic decisions about who leads them and to influence the way the city grows and develops," says DCC Deputy Electoral Officer, Robyn Dillon. "Candidates for Mayor, Council and our local Community Boards have an opportunity to present their vision for the city to the public, and - if elected - make a real difference in their community."
The Candidate Information Evening will be held at 6pm on Thursday, 3 July at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Auditorium. Those in attendance will hear from DCC Electoral Officer Anthony Morton and DCC Chief Executive Sandy Graham, as well as representatives from the Otago Regional Council.
"If you're thinking of standing for election, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the ins and outs of the election process and the roles and responsibilities of being an elected member. Prospective candidates will hear how Council is structured, the skills they need to be an effective elected member, and information about the nomination process. They'll also be able to ask any questions."
To stand for election, candidates must be nominated by two people, enrolled to vote and a New Zealand citizen by the nomination deadline. Prospective candidates can visit www.dunedin.govt.nz/stand and read our Candidate Handbook for detailed information about standing in this year's local elections.
Postal voting will take place from September, and polls will close at midday on Saturday, 11 October.
"We're also urging all eligible Dunedin voters to make sure they're enrolled to vote," says Ms Dillon. "It's quick and easy to check your details or enrol online at vote.nz."
