US publishing revenue up 2.5% to USD33.4bn in 2025
In its latest StatShot Annual report, the Association of American Publishers estimates that US publishing industry revenue reached USD33.4bn in 2025, up 2.5% from USD32.5bn in 2024 and 16.1% from 2021.
Trade publishing revenue increased 2.7% to USD21.7bn, with the growth led by Religious Presses, which rose 9.3% to USD2.2bn, while Adult Fiction grew 3.9% to USD7.1bn.
Higher Education Course Materials revenue increased 8.5% to USD4.7bn, while PreK-12 Instructional Materials declined 2.5% to USD5.2bn.
Professional & Scholarly revenue, excluding journals, fell 1.2% to USD1.3bn, while University Presses rose 4.9% to USD368 million.
Print formats accounted for 50.6% of total publishing revenue, with hardback revenue increasing 3.9% to USD8.2bn and paperback revenue rising 2.1% to USD8.0bn.
Digital formats represented 14.2% of industry revenue, up 4.3% from 2024, with Digital Audio rising 5.3% to USD2.5bn and eBooks growing 3.2% to USD2.2bn.
Within Trade publishing, digital formats accounted for 21.5% of revenue, with Digital Audio increasing 5.3% and eBooks rising 3.0%.
Online Retail remained the largest sales channel, showing a 3.1% increase in revenue to USD12.3bn, while Physical Retail grew 7.2% to USD6.7bn and Intermediary channel revenue declined 0.6% to USD4.4bn.
