St. Martin's Press acquires Senator Joe Manchin's memoir
Publishing company Macmillan Publishers revealed on Tuesday that former US Senator Joe Manchin's memoir, DEAD CENTER: In Defense of Common Sense, will be released on 16 September 2025 by St. Martin's Press. The book will be available in hardcover, ebook and audiobook formats.
George Witte, senior vice president and editor-in-chief of St. Martin's Publishing Group, secured the North American publishing rights from CAA's David Larabell.
The memoir features a foreword by Manchin's lifelong friend, Coach Nick Saban, and offers readers an insight into Manchin's personal journey from West Virginia's coalfields to the US Senate. It explores pivotal moments, tough decisions and the values that shaped his career, including his belief in fiscal responsibility, social compassion and country over party.
DEAD CENTER provides a unique look into Senate and White House dealings, presenting Manchin's perspective on government functioning and the challenges of modern political gridlock. The book is centered around Manchin's 'Rules of the Road', a personal code shaped by his life experiences, with an emphasis on collaboration, compromise, and leadership.
Manchin, who served as a US senator from 2010 to 2025, expressed that the book serves as a declaration of independence from political extremes. He advocates for leadership grounded in civility, respect and practical solutions.
George Witte highlighted Manchin's distinct storytelling style, noting that DEAD CENTER would captivate readers with its candid, insightful narrative. Since retiring from the Senate, Manchin is focusing on promoting commonsense leadership and improving political literacy.
